Is there an emerging pattern of getting bad news on the first day of the UN climate conferences? Last year, Japan announced on the first day that it wasn’t going to sign up to a second Kyoto Period under any circumstances. This year, there is a news report according to which Canada is going to pull out of the Kyoto Protocol entirely. In a sense, it doesn’t make much of a difference as Canada announced five years ago that it wasn’t going to comply with its Kyoto commitments. Instead of the required 6% below 1990 levels Canada’s emissions are currently about 30% above 1990. But still this news is certainly not going to contribute to having a good atmosphere at this conference which has the future of the Protocol as one of its key issues.
